Van Gogh’s sunflower series are among the most famous of his works; they demonstrate the ability to create an image from variations of a single color. To van Gogh, they communicated the expression of gratitude. Famously he depicts a vase filled with sunflowers in various stages of life, some that live while others are dead with many in-between these stages.
