Formally “Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq” this extra-large painting was Rembrandt’s masterwork. It is most renowned for its dramatic use of light and shadow and the appearance of motion in what would normally have been a standard military group portrait.

Restored in 2021, including “adding on” sides that had been cut off in the 1700s (not included here).
