This painting is based on Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem, which tells the story of a cursed woman who is forbidden to look directly out of her window. Instead, she can only view the outside world through a mirror. The painting captures the key moment in the poem when the Lady of Shalott, overcome by curiosity and desire, turns away from her weaving and gazes directly outside.
