American Gothic

By: Grant Wood
Date: 1930
Medium: Oil on beaverboard
Size: 78 x 65.3 cm (30 3/4 x 25 3/4 in.)
Location: Art Institute of Chicago

One of the best known of all American paintings, this work shows a farmer standing beside his daughter (often incorrectly assumed to be his wife). The painting’s name comes from the house’s style, Carpenter Gothic. The figures were modeled by Wood’s sister and their dentist.
